In life people have to overcome challenges, and ask themselves hard questions to get them through the hard times. In the book Boy 21, by Matthew Quick shows in the book how the main character {Finley} has to go through tough times. Finley doesn't a lot of good things going good for him. One he is not in the upper class or even middle class, and it's only his Dad, and his drunken Grandpa at home. Finley plays basketball for his school, and it is his senior year in high school. Finley is a really good kid, and he is very reliable. The coach notices that and puts him up for a job to handle a kid named Russ Washington. The coach was friends with his parents before they were murdered and now he sees Finley is the one for the job. Which for Finley is not that good because he could lose his spot on the basketball team to him, Russ is ranked 5th in the nation.
One of the ways Finley has to overcome a hard problem is to watch us or not. Russ is a good kid and all but the selfishness might get to Finley. But since Finley is a good kid, he realizes that the kid had just lost his parents and he is going through a tough time. How would you feel if you had just lost both of your parents, you would feel lonely. On top of that you have a kid who is supposed to be with you, leave you. Now that is bad, and i think Finley realized that before he made that decision. Another way is that Finley is tempted to leave Russ again. Russ thinks he is an alien not from the planet Earth. Sounds like there is something wrong with this kid. That is the problem he is faced with, other then that, they could both get bullied. We all know that bullying is the worst to go through. And for Finley to be getting bullied for helping this kid out is wrong. So I think Finley still stays with him because they have both been through tough times. And the final way it shows how he has to go through tough times, he takes it upon himself to help out the family. Overall he has to take care of his grandpa when he gets home from school, has school to go through, watch out for his girlfriend and many other things. He knows that his family is poor, so he gets a job to help out the family. So through all of this and watching over Russ he goes and gets a job.
What I learned from Finley and Boy 21 is to always look at the overall problem. When he wants to leave Russ he remembers all the thing that happened to Russ. So it's also like never judging a book by its cover, you never know what a person is going through in their personal life. Also Finley is not selfish and does not let a challenge set him back. Finley is a good role model.
